Monday Media – At First Sight

It’s Monday, which means it’s another media roundup! Although this one is a bit different: I haven’t seen or read the media on the list due to the fact they aren’t released yet. ( ゚ε゚;) But I can’t stop thinking about them! Please experience the excitement with me as I talk about these anticipated works.

They Swallowed the Sun

I rarely stake my interest in a book solely on its cover but seeing the cover for They Swallowed the Sun in its full glory: 🤌🏾 chef’s kiss.

They Swallowed the Sun is a Black speculative fiction anthology in which each author will explore the same question: do we die with the sun or live in spite of it? From fantasy to sci-fi, horror to dark romance, Afropunk to genre benders seeking to build new narratives, They Swallowed the Sun hasn’t launched on Kickstarter yet but the promise of stories of unyielding spirit and Black celebration even as societies collapse and stars die out has me checking the page daily.

Honey by Imani Thompson

Between repetitive pins, endless ads and ai slop, browsing through Pinterest is admittedly, not great. Especially when compared to the site’s creative peak years ago. But Sometimes! Sometimes you get something good. Like an uploaded screenshot of Imani Thompson’s debut novel Honey.

After accidentally killing a problematic professor, Yrsa, once bored graduate student, finds a new purpose in killing other men who’ve become too comfortable in their sexist behavior. And she uses her own academic research to justify the murders! And there’s family secrets that might get revealed! But above all that, the question of how far will her actions go has me intrigued enough to check it out when it releases in May.

Is God Is (2026)

In Aleshea Harris’ directorial debut, twin sisters Racine and Anaia go to see their bedridden mother. On her deathbed, she tells the girls to find and kill their father, the very man responsible for setting the kill that scarred the three of them. Traveling to find their father and his new family, the sisters have to decide seek vengeance against the man who harmed them or find it within themselves to forgive. (I very much hope it’s the first option.)

How can I not be even a little obsessed with the premise. Even before the full cast reveal and the Ya Ya track kicked in, I knew Is God Is was going to be a film I need to see as the trailer played on.

May is shaping up to be an exciting media month. But until then, I plan to fill the time with other fun things as I wait. Patiently of course.

Until the next post,

.chel
