It’s pumpkin bread season! This is not to say that pumpkin bread isn’t made year round but that my output is greater during this time of year. Which means I spend a little more time in the kitchen as the weather cools. 1-2 hours per cooking session minimum is a lot of time.

It’s perfect for watching longer video media that doesn’t require my complete visual attention. Jen Campbell is an excellent companion during those hours. She talks about books, both her own and others, the history of fairy tales, and the representation of disability and disfigurement in stories.
As a disability advocate herself, Campbell’s insights on how disabilities are portrayed in media, both the good and the bad, have broaden my own expectations in how I consume media as an able-bodied individual.
Despite how heavy the topic can be, watching Jen Campbell feels more like a causal chat rather than a straight cut review of the books. And sometimes she shares what she’s baking! Constant inspiration to try out new things when cooking! Maybe I’ll give zucchini and potato soup a try next. You know, as practice for soup season.
Sorry if you were expecting food metaphors and comparisons. This is just me reflecting on my new ventures in cooking and how I generally spend my free time when I have it.
And if the book list is a little longer this year, well, what else is new.
