.chel’s Spooky TBR

The reason this list exists is simply because I wanted to mention my favorite current reads and a few creepy ones I’m excited to curl up with as the cold weather sets in! Honestly, that’s all. And so, my five picks:

Unfettered Hexes

While I could technically read all three issues of Void Junk again, I think it’s time to dive back into Neon Hemlock Press’ catalog for something new.

Their anthology, Unfettered Hexes: Queer Tales of Insatiable Darkness (which I had the joy of backing on Kickstarter last year), is filled with stories of queer witches and hexes, rituals both sacred and profane, and the infinite darkness they wander.

The Me You Love in the Dark

There are few (and I mean very few) booktok recommendations that catch my attention and even less that I note to check out at a later date. When it comes to book buying, I know exactly what I like. But the premise of The Me You Love in the Dark was too enticing to pass up.

An artist retreats to an old house to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, only to eventually discover her new muse is more than it seems.

Shades of Fear

I actually received this in the mail a couple of days ago. Shades of Fear is an anthology of psychological horror comics. A woman whose thoughts are suddenly broadcasted over the radio, a nuclear plant trainee starts listening to the call of the reactor, and the question of what becomes of an android companion if she’s alone are a few of the tales spanning over 150 pages of full-color artwork by various cartoonists.

Monstress

Monstress is an ongoing epic fantasy comics series written by Marjorie Liu and drawn by Sana Takeda. And oh, what an epic tale it is so far.

In their search for Kippa through a warped land, Maika comes face-to-face with a stranger from her past. With more truths uncovered, Maika is close to getting answers. But with a war between the Federation and Arcanics on the horizon, which side will Maika choose?

What better time to return to the Murakumo Inn! I’ll be picking up where I left off in volume 7. This time, the guest is a young writer struggling to “live” while our recurring cast of characters begin to interact more and discover their connections with each other. Such is the human experience.

As the leaves change and we speed to the end of another year, I hope we all find some time to squeeze in some spooky reads off our shelves.
