Popshot Magazine: The Future Issue

“Popshot is an illustrated literary magazine that publishes short stories, flash fiction and poetry from the literary new blood.”

The future may seem frightening and full of evil, and maybe it is to an extent, but we often forget that the media isn’t representative of the real future. The future is when you wake in the morning with the sun in your eyes. It’s how you go about your day. The real future isn’t as dramatic as the media portrays it. At some point, the reality of the media began to outweigh our own. But we shouldn’t be discouraged. Quite the opposite, in fact.

In their seventeenth issue, Popshot imagines how life might be different in the future through a variety of short stories and poems. I picked some of my favourite works from the issue.

Children of the New World explores the darker corners of the internet, specifically open culture, and the rise of internet scams, hackers and trolls. And what happens when those things hit close to home. Literally.

What would happen if artificial intelligence became emotionally aware? The Motherhood Effect questions how it would happen.

Giraffe is a poem that attempts to articulate the emotions associated with recovering from mental illness.

I hope you take the time to pick up the latest issue and look at what the future has to offer. Jacob Denno, Editor of Popshot, stated it best:

“Sometimes it’s important to point to the darkness to remind ourselves to stay in the light.”
